‘I don’t like the way David de Gea is leaving…he deserves more respect’ – Exclusive interview with Ben Foster

De Gea spent 12 years at Old Trafford, including winning the Premier League title in 2012/13, but failed to extend his stay at Old Trafford and is currently a free agent.

Foster, who made 23 appearances for United between 2007 and 2010, is preparing for a new second-tier season with newly promoted Wrexham in the United States. The 40-year-old believes there is no real need for his former club to sign Andre Onana, even with the Cameroon international established as the new long-term number one.

“I don’t like the way David de Gea is leaving, I really don’t,” said Foster, who is targeting promotion to the First Division with Wrexham this season. “David deserves more respect given what he’s done for United over the years. Football is brutal.

David de Gea recently left Manchester United

“Sometimes you get some players who want more money or bigger contracts. Then the fans will flock to them and abuse them. But under De Gea, he played for Manchester United for more than ten years and many more. Player of the Year for the second time. He was unbelievable and the way they handled his exit was disappointing.”

Andre Onana is on the verge of a £47m move from Inter Milan to Old Trafford, with Manchester United chasing him while David de Gea’s future remains uncertain.

Onana was one of the outstanding goalkeepers who reached the Champions League final with Inter Milan last season. United have offered him a five-year deal with a one-year option. Eric ten Hag has been impressed with his finishing, authority in the box and leadership.

Foster praised Onana’s quality but added he questioned the wisdom of spending big on a new goalkeeper when a striker like Harry Kane appears to be more of a priority for the club.

“Onana is a good goalie and very athletic,” Foster said. “But playing in the Premier League is a different story. To play in the Premier League and play for Manchester United requires a great goalkeeper and a great personality. That’s De Gea. I know he divided the fanbase, but over the years He contributed at least 7/10 for Manchester United and played with a lot of pressure. Now we will see how Andre is next season, but it is not the easiest job.

“The reality is United need to be in the top four. If they can get Harry Kane, they’ll be cooking. I still think they need to put the ball in the back of the net. That’s going to be their priority going into the season, however , when the club already had a very good goalkeeper, they paid around £40m for a goalkeeper, which is why I said we have to wait and see if that happens. The transfer got return.”
